…a new series presented by McNally Jackson and Time Out New York!
Very, very excited about this: TONY is teaming up with McNally Jackson to present a new event, Ask Me About…. Hosted by our Books editor, Matthew Love, the series gives book casual readers and bookworms alike an excuse to tackle that classic they’ve just never read. The first event happens August 23, and the book is Joseph Heller’s Catch-22; Todd Hanson of The Onion will give a lecture, and there will be booze and entertainment. Fun!
Plus, there’s a bonus for early birds: The first 20 people to R.S.V.P. to askmeaboutbookclub@gmail.com can pick up a free copy of the book at McNally (and it’s the schmancy 50th-anniversary edition, to boot). So, you know, get on that.
Get on it.
The eating habits of Mac users v. PC users. Nothing too surprising here. Although “Mac users prefer bistro fries” makes us wonder what exactly bistro fries are. Who knows! Sounds fussy!

Mark your calendars: Nerd Jeopardy is back for round two. If you’ve ever sought public validation for your deep knowledge of obscure literature, your time has come.
Since we had an overflow crowd at Lolita Bar, this time we’re taking over the great Housing Works Bookstore in Soho. We’ll provide wine and beer until it runs out, then it’s a cash bar. A cash bar that will make you feel good about yourself: all proceeds fight AIDS and homelessness.

Miss Abs: Are you watching closely?
That’s right: in the land of crushing rents. Over the past couple of years, more than half a dozen indie bookshops have opened around the city, from Greenlight Books in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, to Book Culture on upper Broadway. (Another independent store may soon appear in midtown Manhattan.) The shops have been launched by both first-timers and veteran entrepreneurs, and though their long-term survival is far from assured, the new businesses are succeeding, thanks to smart merchandising and carefully chosen locations.
Their presence is not just good for publishers who rely on the indies’ 10% market share to help launch new writers. They’re also a sign of a larger truth in business: that nimble operators can adjust to a changed landscape better than some bigger players.
